The great crested newt is a threatened species and it is protected by law. They are dark brown in colour with bright yellow markings on the underside. They hibernate in the winter and in the breeding season the males develop an obvious crest between the head and the tail. Only people with a special license are allowed to handle them. |

Hagg Lane Green is common land registered by Hemingbrough Parish Council and designated as an open space for the benefit of the whole community. The Hagg Lane Green Project is supported by Hemingbrough School, local groups, clubs, organizations and associations, and is managed by the Hemingbrough—Hagg Lane Green Conservation Group, which is made up of Parish Councilors and volunteers from the community. The Conservation Group secured grant funding for this project from groups such as The National Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund and BBC Breathing Places. The boardwalks lead you around the ponds where you can glimpse the rich variety of wildlife, flora and fauna that make this place their home. Hagg Lane Green also has an industrial heritage, with brick manufacture and flax “retting” having taken place in the past.
